How hard is the Vietnamese language?

If you ask the Vietnamese themselves, that’s pretty much unlikely. Among its 90 million people, the alleged complexity of Vietnam’s official language is a point of national pride, and locals are happy to tell you “tiếng Việt khó !” (Vietnamese is difficult) at any opportunity possible.

So if you’re learning Vietnamese, or dreaming about learning, it’s possible that discouragement is all you’ve been having so far!

It is true that pronouncing Vietnamese can be tricky, with six tones and a multitude of unusual vowel sounds that we don’t have in English. But most Vietnamese ex-pats do not know that Vietnamese pronunciation is just about the only difficult thing. Every other aspect of the language, particularly compared to most European languages, is extremely simple, far easier than what you would expect.

Vietnam’s health-care system combines Eastern and Western medicine aspects. The Vietnamese government is currently working on establishing a comprehensive health-care program that will provide basic medical services for all citizens.

At present, most Vietnamese citizens in both private and public hospitals have to pay for the medical services themselves. Vietnamese citizens often prefer to use private hospitals, because they are typically better equipped.

Expats must take out private health insurance before they are on their way to Vietnam. It will protect them at private health-care institutions for treatment.
